Audio streaming or web casting has been around for
years and is quickly gaining popularity. Web casting
takes many forms from internet radio stations using
special streaming software to simple audio file selection
with the audio file placed on the streaming relay.
The benefit to audio streaming is the streaming ability
itself.
How many times have you clicked a link to listen to something then had to wait until it was downloaded to your computer before you could listen to it. A large audio file can take minutes or hours depending on your connection speed. Streaming Audio takes the audio file or live feed and sets up a connection depending on the configuration and sends the stream at a specified rate to the listeners computer. This stream is then played in the listeners media player of choice.
What this means is that an audio file of 3 megs in size streamed at 32 kps could be listened by a visitor on dial-up in under 5 seconds once the media player has started. At 32 kps the quality is about AM quality and at 128 kps the quality is CD quality so you have several choices of how you would like your audio file played.
The benefit to you as the audio provider is that your listeners don't have to wait until the file is downloaded to be listened to; which could potentially lose listeners due to download speed. The benefit to your listeners is that content is delivered quickly and especially to dial-up listeners where time is money.
